A Poem for Reg
If you’ve bought peat-moss or gravel or soil with some sand,

If you’ve had anything at all to do with the land;

Then you’ll know of Reg Norman, contractor renown,

And defier of wind that would blow things around.

And the wind in this country that blows ‘cross the land,

Can make havoc of much that man planted to stand;

It can gust and disrupt, it can blow so darn strong,

Big men and large critters hunker down ‘till it‘s gone.

Ol’ Reg knows the wind, he’s been here for awhile,

And he knows Mother Nature ain’t always on smile;

He knows She prefers gusts and snorts from the west,

So when he built on his door he thought east would be best.

The front counter is there, then door and then street,

And all ‘long the counter notes piled up quite neat:

Notes of importance all light as a feather,

Defying a sneeze and the wind altogether.

When you open the door you’ll see Reg standing there,

Shufflin’ up notes..sort of like solitaire;

Some for the counter and some for shirt pocket..

Reg says this system works well, so why should he knock it?

‘Course Reg is no fool and he knows his directions,

Though west is Her norm, She makes some exceptions:

She’ll sneak ‘round to the east to annoy and to flirt..

But he just makes sure his business is stuffed in his shirt.

His notes of importance that defy wind or sneeze,

Should lift off the counter with the slightest of breeze:

Yet it just doesn’t happen, much to logic’s chagrin,

Ol’ Reg has some deal…..and it’s sure with the wind.

Technology’s not what this man is about!

To store in a computer the handwritten note???

For men of his vintage it seems almost obscene…

To chase words around with a mouse on a screen.

His file’s in his pocket, (how deftly he plucks,)

And knows just exactly, which men and what trucks;

And where they’re to go, and when they’ll be home,

All from pieces of paper the wind leaves alone.

These little notes that are light as a feather,

Defy reasonable odds and the wind altogether.

So if you’d like to do business with a man in a shirt,

I’d saddle up, ride in and talk to Reg first.

 Macko (Neil MacLean)

Reg was a friend to my long deceased Uncle Harry Usipiuk and has unfailingly been friendly and kind to me and my family. Over the decades it has always been a great pleasure and learning experience to have his friendly greeting, delightful smile and hug. He always gave me special attention, advice and excellent service with all my yard and garden projects. His example of gentile goodwill taught me to be a better person.

Jean, Jim and the Norman Family, We were very sad to hear of the passing of Reg last week. His strong quiet presence brings a smile to me when I think of being in Dawson Creek and at the farm. I remember Reg sitting in the living room at Jim and Laurette's, coming to visit the girls and myself every time we came to visit, making us feel like we were auxiliary members of the Norman clan. With warm wishes and our condolences, Sarah, Gabrielle and Isabelle Dussault

My thoughts go out to the whole Norman family. Reg was one of the nicest and most sincere human beings I have ever met and I am so thankful that my first 'real job was in that little white with blue trim trucking office! (Thanks Sally!) Reg showed me, at an early age, what great customer service and work ethic looked Like ... and I am so ever grateful for those lessons. Although I really wish he had forgotten that I had to ask him how to make coffee for the guys that first day! Fond memories I will cherish forever. Your legacy is the life lessons you passed on to the next generation . .. simply priceless.

So sad to hear of Reg's passing. When we visited him the other day, he was putting up a pretty good front. Like most of us, he was not happy with the "golden years". He is at peace now and we all have treasures of memories when Reg was at his best - he was a true mentor to many. He will be missed and our thoughts are with the family. Allen & Sheila
