Obituary of Adel Doris Spacil

Grandma was born January 27, 1928 in Enilda, Alberta. She had three brothers and two sisters and lived on a small farm. When they were both twenty years old, Grandpa met Grandma when she worked as a second cook with her mother, Ida, and he was hauling logs at the Marshall Sawmill at mile twenty-two on the Alaska Highway, four years, they were married on May 3, 1954--this year marks their 60th year together. Grandma had six children. Her firstborn twin girls who passed away in infancy, Auntie Margaret, baby Edward who also passed away, Dad, and Auntie Carol. Grandma never ever got her drivers license. However, she did have a first and last attempt at driving. When they were living on 115th Avenue in Dawson Creek, Grandpa was coaching Grandma while she was turning into the driveway. Apparently, he told her to "watch where she was going" causing her to panic. As a result, she crashed into the fence. Dad recalls that she hit the garage door and something landed on the hood of the car. Grandpa doesn't think so since he didn't have to fix the door. What they both agree on was that Grandma definitely took out a few fence posts. Grandma loved to listen to religious songs, and when she was younger, she played the guitar and sang. She used to love watching all the soaps, but in more recent years limited herself to "Another World" and "The Bold and the Beautiful." Before her eyesight got too bad, she used to like reading romance and mystery novels. She had a sense of humour and loved making jokes. Shopping was a favourite pastime of Grandma's; the Sally Ann was her favourite store. She spent a lot of time sewing on the old Raymond foot pedal machine she got from great-grandma Spacil. Grandma always made sure everyone got a homemade quilt to be warm; she even made a seven foot special order for Neil. Grandma would often spend entire days baking to fill her deepfreeze just to send it home with whoever came by to visit. Her cookie jar was always stocked; you could always count on fresh homemade buns, and pie and jam made from berries she picked herself. We could sit for hours and listen to all Grandma's stories about the old days and didn't mind her teasing, those of us old enough, for more great-grand kids. Doris...Mom...Granny...Grams...Grandma....no matter how it was said the words will forever be said with love. predeceased by: mother Ida Gladue; father Peter Bigcharles. Sister Florence, Brothers Frank, George, Doug Bigcharles. Survived by: Loving husband, Edward, Son, Ron and family, Daughter, Margaret and family, Daughter Carol. Doris passed away on March 27, 2010 in Dawson Creek, B.C. at the age of 82 years. A funeral Mass was held on Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at 1:00 pm at Notre Dame Catholic Church, Fr. Michael Anyasoro officiated, Interment will be at a later date.
