Obituary of Douglas Papp

Doug was born on May 26, 1956 to James and Frances Papp. He was the fifth of six sons. His schooling included Notre Dame, Frank Ross and South Peace Senior Secondary School. Doug was a genius at fixing anything with a mechanical part in it. He worked at Tumbler Ridge as a mechanic for several years. He then switched his occupation to truck driving and hauled logs and cattle. Doug then had an accident hauling logs which disabled him from the work force. Doug's hobbies included fast cars, hunting, fishing and camping with large camp fires. His first shop was located in a back alley off of 17th street. Doug could make an engine run better than most other mechanics. Doug was smart at figuring out faster and better ways to flat rate a job. His Dodge Dart was his pride and joy. Doug set a goal to get it running by his fiftieth birthday and accomplished this. Doug was an excellent driver and loved to push it to the limits. Then there was Willie the jeep. Doug and Barry Neste found a small creek behind One Island Lake with foot long rainbow trout in it. There was a huge swamp we had to go through to get there. We got stuck in the middle of it going downhill. We were able to winch our way out. Then as planned we caught several rainbow trout. Whenever we were in a mechanical bind Doug would figure out a way. We were elk hunting many miles away from civilization when I forgot a light on in my truck. Doug took the blade off the chainsaw and connected it to the alternator on the truck. He charged the battery with the chainsaw and our problem was solved. Doug hated to work on non North American vehicles. My sports car was a Datsun 280 ZX. He was sure a Japanese ghost was within this vehicle. Doug had several special nature spots he visited often. The main ones were Puggins Mountain, One Island Lake, Mile 19 on the old Skunka Highway and Murray River. During high school, he spent many weekends at One Island Lake. Doug didn't waterski but naturally was the mechanic and driver. Doug also loved to farm and raise his horses. His favourite horse name was Bud. His family was his dogs Tia, Max and Lou. Doug was the most warm hearted and giving person when it came to children, friends and family. Doug was predeceased by his father James; brothers Ron, Ken; sister Sharon. He is survived by his mother Frances; brother Richard, Larry, Michael; sisters Jennifer, Michele. Doug passed away Wednesday, May 5, 2010 in Dawson Creek, BC at the age of 53 years. A memorial service was held Monday, May 10, 2010 at 11:00 am at the Notre Dame Parish; Fr. Michael Anyasoro officiated.
