Obituary of Kathy Posmikewich

Kathy was born Kazimira Zoibron on January 1, 1944 in Mielec, Poland to Joseph and Catherina Zoibron. Life was simple but it was also very hard after the 2nd World War. Her mother and father grew all kinds of vegetables and they also had a little hobby farm, raising their own chickens, goats, horses and cows. Joseph Posmikewich and his dad, Walter, took a trip to Poland to visit relatives. That is when he met Kathy. In 1966, Kathy took all of her belongings and made the long voyage on the Batory, a ship that sailed to Canada, to marry Joe. She said it was a long trip and she was sea sick the whole time. Kathy married Joseph on December 17, 1966. It was hard for Kathy to adapt to living in a small little farming community in Dawson Creek. She spoke only Polish and hardly understood English. Kathy and Joe had their first child, Helene in 1967, and soon after came Sandra, Barbara and Sara. Kathy was a stay at home mother. She would always have a garden and enjoyed canning. Kathy taught herself to speak and read English. One of her proudest accomplishments was becoming a Canadian Citizen. When Joe had any time off, the whole family would all go fishing. One of Kathy's most memorable times, was when she was able to see her father after she had moved to Canada. He had moved to New York from Poland and lived with Kathy's cousins. Her mother passed away in the early 1970's, it was a very devastating time for Kathy, the last time she saw her mother was when she left Poland. Kathy was someone that was always there for you, always made sure you were okay and that you were always fed. She never complained and never asked for anything. Kathy was either quiet as a mouse or else you would hear her humming along to just about anything. Kathy's husband Joe became ill and it got harder for her to look after him at home. When Joe had to be moved to Pouce Coupe Care Home, all four daughters made sure that Kathy was taken to the care home every day so that she could be with her husband. Kathy leaves her children Helen (John) Tanchuk, Sandra Posmikewich and Darryl Bumstead, Barbara (Marc) Risvold, Sara Posmidewich; grandchildren Nicholas, Jenna, Amanda, Emily; brothers Frank, Joe; her pets MoJo, Freddie, Willy. Kathy passed away Thursday, April 29, 2010 in Dawson Creek, BC at the age of 66 years. A funeral service was held Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at 1:00 pm from Reynars Funeral Home; Fr. Michael Anyasoro officiated; Interment followed in the Dawson Creek City Cemetery. For friends so wishing, donations may be made in memory of Kathy to the BC Heart & Stroke Foundation.
