Obituary of Thomas Knott

In 1931 Tom was born in Gage, Alberta to Walter & Maria Knott .Tom was the third oldest of five children. The family lived and resided in and around Fairview, Alberta throughout most of Tom's younger years. At the age of 14 Tom began to work on various farms. In winter with only a Seesaw, Axe and a team of horses he would load logs and haul them into town to sell for firewood often selling a load for $8.00. On one of Toms trips to town to sell a load of wood he sat down at a poker game and returned home not only with his team of horses and sleigh, but with a second team that he won at a poker game trip into town. Tom loved to tell stories of his younger days, but only if you were visiting him alone. If there were 2 people around you had to hold your breath to hear him at times. Often times he would reminisce about his neighbour and the farm in Fairview. By 1955 Tom had made his way to Dawson Creek, BC with his mother and 3 siblings. Tom took many labour jobs for surrounding farms, BC Hydro Pipeline companies and the Forestry. He even found himself in the winter becoming a small-time business man where he had a lot of work from local businesses clearing rooftops & sidewalks. He would sometimes have up to 5 people working for him. Uncle Tom would sometimes get 3, 4, 5 different woman phoning him and asking him to pick-up stuff for them. One would want something from Shopper's, another saw that something was on sale at Zeller's and then another would want something at Safeway. So off Tom would go on the bus. And he would deliver everything the woman wanted to their home. He once sat on the board for the Friendship Centre. One day he came home and told Jerry he got fired. Jerry asked why and he said because he was to quiet. Up until a few years ago Uncle Tom always enjoyed a good snowfall or the leaves falling and the older ladies phoning him. He was not one to sit still for a long time when there was something to do. In the remaining years Uncle Tom enjoyed his gardening. He loved taking care of his pets and listening to Gospel music. Selling eggs was another thing he enjoyed. Tom will be sadly missed by his family & friends. Thomas passed away on Thursday, June 24, 2010 in Dawson Creek at the age of 79 years. A Wake was held on Monday, June 28, at 7:00 pm at the Nawican Friendship Center in Dawson Creek.
