Obituary of Fern Dalke

Caroline Fern Emma Dalke was the youngest child of 9 born to Oscar and Emma Johnson in Lloydminster, SK. In 1957 they moved to Dawson Creek. Fern first met Glen in Grade 7 at Central School. He used to con her into doing his typing assignments. She later found out that he was with all his pals playing pool. On February 3, 1968 they were married. In 1971 they built a house in Sherwood Park. They had two sons, Todd and Chad. In 1974 they moved back to Dawson Creek and Fern became a stay at home mom until the boys were 12 and 13. Fern then went to work full time at the Health Unit where she worked for over 20 years until she got breast cancer in 2002 and could no longer go back to work. Fern had a personality that friends, relatives, co-workers and even strangers gravitated towards, however she was not a push-over. While at the Health Unit the saying was "Fern will do anything for anyone ... just don't get her mad". She was also the ultimate window shopper, loved to shop but was a thrifty spender waiting patiently until an item would come on sale. Fern loved Christmas. The house would be all decorated up and she couldn't seem to stop buying presents for everyone. She would cook Christmas suppers for up to 20 people at times and really enjoyed it. It was her favourite time of the year. Fern's greatest joy was when Chad and Rona told her that she was to become a Grandmother. Fern still has the booties they gave her. A baby girl, Brighid, was born, Fern's only female child in the family. Three years later Jarod was born. Now she had one of each. Fern really loved and adored her grandchildren. Over the years Fern and Glen did a lot of travelling, Mexico, USA and three cruises. In 2006 they went to Puerto Vallarta for Todd and Carolyn's wedding. Fern is survived by her husband Glen; sons Todd (Carolyn), Chad (Rona); grandchildren Brighid, Jarod; sisters Ruby Passmore, Audrey Rayner; in-laws Lee & Bob Trail, Aleck Fawdrey, Larry & Rusty Dalke, Reg Hunter, Connie Dalke; numerous nephews and nieces and many friends including her best friend Vi Peterson. She was predeceased by her parents Emma & Oscar Johnson; brothers Allan, Lewis, Edward, Robert, Dallas; sister Darlene Fawdrey; father-in-law Dan Dalke; brothers-in-law Lorne and Dennis Dalke, Eric Rayner and Russel Passmore; sister-in-law Carole Hunter. Fern passed away Wednesday, June 16, 2010 in Dawson Creek , BC at the age of 66 years. A memorial service was held Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at 2:00 pm from Reynars Funeral Home; Nephew Randy Passmore officiated; Interment followed in the Brookside Cemetery.
