Obituary of Evelyn May Higens

Ev was born on November 21, 1933 in Dawson Creek. She was the fourth child of Homer and Ruby Stevenson. Her childhood years were spent on the farm in the Lakeview District, and later in Dawson Creek. Ev attended the Lakeview School, the old Camp School and finally South Peace High School. In 1953, Ev met Frank Higens and they married on August 28, 1954. Frank moved Ev up the Alaska Highway to start their new life in Swift River and then later in Watson Lake. They spent 11 years in the Yukon, during which they welcomed 5 children, Valerie, Sidney, Donald, Lyle and Leslie. Ev was a stay at home mom, who was always available to help other moms with their families and even at times taking on the role of a midwife. Ev was a very active member of the Fynn's Corner sewing group. These ladies spent many hours quilting, and sewing. This group is where Ev made many lifelong friends, ones that have been cherished over the years by the whole family. Summers were always a busy time for Ev. Coupled with maintaining a huge flower and vegetable garden, she spent many weekends traveling to outlying communities like Bonanza and Silver Valley to judge home arts and horticulture exhibits at their local fairs. Ev and Frank dedicated 12 years to the Dawson Creek Vandal Watch program. In recent years they have been active in the South Peace Historical Society, working at the Museum and Walter Wright Pioneer Village. Through out all the years of community service, Ev was conscientious about donating to her community, through her church, food banks and anyone in need. However, her true calling in life was being a loving wife and mother and granny to Nathan and Megan, Dustan and Crystal, Tanner and Chelsea, Tyler, Riley, Lauren, Kyle. Ev was a remarkably strong, thoughtful, hardworking, fun-loving person. She was a person of great integrity and devotion to her family. Ev truly cherished and loved her son-in-law Brian and her daughters-in-law Lorna and Tammy; they always made her proud in all that they did, and for their care, acceptance and love for her daughter and sons. Ev was predeceased by her parents Homer and Ruby Stevenson: Sister Kathleen Ripley: Brothers Leslie and Gordon Stevenson; and her Son Lyle Allen. She will be lovingly remembered by: her husband Frank of 56 years, Valerie & Brian and their children, Nathan & Megan, Dustin & Crystal, & Tanner & Chelsea Scott. Sidney & Darrel, Donald & Lorna, Leslie & Tammy and their children, Tyler and Riley, Lyle's children Lauren & Kyle VanGenne, Two sisters Jean Burns and Fern Anderson, Sister-in-law Eve Swenson, Along with numerous cherished nieces, nephews & cousins. Evelyn passed away on Wednesday, October 6, 2010 in Dawson Creek, B.C. A funeral service was held on Friday, October 15, at 1:00 pm at the South Peace United Church, Reverend Marilyn Carroll officiated. Very Respectfully Reynars Funeral Home and Crematorium.
