Obituary of Margaret Ann Fraser

Margaret was born on May17, 1937 in St. Joseph's Hospital in Dawson Creek. Margaret attended the Sunset Prairie School and travelled by horseback to and from. She attended high school in Dawson Creek and stayed in the on-site dorms as school bus transportation was not available. In 1956 she met her future husband Alex who had come to the Peace River District surveying for the Pacific Great Eastern Railroad. Alex was working in Fort St. John when they met and he would travel to Sunset Prairie to visit Margaret on the week-ends. They were married on November 30, 1957 in Dawson Creek. Initially they resided in Fort St. John but soon they bought a half section of land and began their own farm in Sunset Prairie. Their first daughter, Betty, was born in August, 1958 and their second daughter, Mary Ann, was in March of 1966. Alex worked out to support his family while Margaret managed the farm. She ran all of the equipment and raised the livestock (and her children). The farm was her passion and she was proud of her livestock. She was very successful and earned many awards. She also had a large vegetable garden with berry patches and many flowers. She gave back to her community through volunteer positions in 4-H and membership in the Kistkatinaw Fall Fair and the Women's Institute. Margaret rarely travelled too far from the farm with most of their family trips co-ordinated with the purchase of breeding stock for the farm. However in the late 1980's Alex and Margaret travelled to England and met Margaret's relatives there. They had a very enjoyable month but were glad to return to their farm. In March, 1991 their first grandchild, Jennifer, was born to Betty and Richard Alexandre. Their second, Damian was born in September of the same year to Ed and Mary Ann McClarty; and Chenise followed two years later in August, 1993. Margaret loved to spend time gardening and farming with her grandchildren. She attended many of the Christmas concerts, dance recitals, plays and sporting events that her grandchildren were involved in. Unfortunately, later in life, Margaret developed Alzheimer's. As the disease advanced it became necessary for Margaret to move to Rotary Manor. Margaret was always busy at the manor, walking, picking flowers and planning her great escape with Hattie Cook. In late January, Margaret fell and broke her leg. She quietly passed away on February 12th, 2011 with her family by her side. Margaret was predeceased by her parents William and Lily Shakeshaft. She is survived by her Husband, Alex Fraser, Brother Walter Shakeshaft, Daughters Betty (Richard) Alexandre and Mary Ann (Ed) McClarty, Grandchildren Jennifer Alexandre and Damian and Chenise McClarty, Nephews Chris and Clinton Shakeshaft and other extended family. A funeral service was held on Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at 2:00 pm from Reynars Funeral Chapel, Reverend Marilyn Carroll officiated, interment will be at a later date. Very Respectfully Reynars Funeral Home.
