Obituary of Robert Popp

Robert Louie Popp came into this world at 3 lbs. 12 oz. on November 16 1946 at Vancouver General Hospital. He was firstborn to Chris and Richard Popp . His family grew when sisters Linda and Wendy came along. Robert lost his father at the very early age of 7 , thus making him the "Man of the House." As the years went by he had to deal with three women in the home... he learned a lot about "patience", but also, how to tease relentlessly. With Robert being "in charge" ( so he thought) there were many many incidents through out the years that his mother probably still does not know about. One in particular that both his sisters recall is what they referred to as the Popcorn Pot. Linda decided to make popcorn the old fashioned way on the stove in a very heavy cast iron pot. She politely asked Robert if he would like some and he gave a snappy "NOPE". Linda brought the pot full of popcorn into the living room and big brother promptly stuck his hand in and... in his teasing fashion....-- grabbed a fistful. In a flash of temper ...Linda used the pot like a Frisbee.. aiming at Robert's head! and as it was flying through the air toward the front room window both brother and sister had eyes as big as saucers when the pot bounced off the post between the two picture windows! Baby sister Wendy, as little as she was, had this memory burned into her brain. This was just one of many almost catastrophes that occurred when Mom was at work and Robert was 'in charge'. Robert spent a lot of time as the base drummer with the Kiwanis Pipe Band in Vancouver. He did some traveling with the band which included a trip to Scotland to compete. While there, he went to the the Isle of Barra where his mother was born and met a lot of relatives and heard stories about his ancestors. He also had lots of his own stories to tell about his antics with his band buddies. At 15 Robert decided to join the workforce at Weldwood of Canada in the mill. With his new found wealth he would often buy something for his sisters and take them wherever they wanted to go in his new ride. He also became a bit of a fashion plate with his fancy duds which included the shiniest reddy/purple suit that managed to change shades with every move he made. He took the plunge into married life in his early twenties when he married Velma and became an instant 'dad' to stepdaughter Dawn. Soon after, son Richard came into the world. He loved his children dearly. Robert moved his family moved to 100 Mile House and for the next few years he and his sisters, Linda and Wendy, were in close proximity again. There were many family members in the Cariboo and new friends brought about lots of good times and special memories. Robert started working in forestry and spent a lot of time in logging camps. He would jokingly say that he spent more time sleeping with his brother in law Bob (in camp) than his sister did! It was at this time, when there were two Bob's in camp that he got 'dubbed' PWee...and it stuck! When Robert relocated to Dawson Creek in the late 80's he again started spending time with brother in law Bob when they worked together for Mario and Nicole Plourde . He kept his teasing skills sharpened at the expense of the Plourde women, Nicole and daughter Linda.... all of course... in fun ! In 1994 he fell in love with Janet and they tied the knot in April of 1997. Robert and Janet moved into their house on 13th street along with Bandit, his American Eskimo puppy. Robert was part of a group who spent many weekends, fishing and camping together for over twenty years. He especially looked forward to the September long weekend fish-fry that became an annual event. He never missed a year. PWee was truly a social guy. He loved to golf, bowl, play board games, cards and enjoyed visiting with his family, many friends and neighbors who could always count on him lending a hand wherever and whenever he could. This past year, PWee challenged his cancer treatments without complaint, but with optimism and hope. He lost his battle with cancer on Saturday November 19, 2011. My wish for all of you today, is that our sadness with his death will soon turn to memories that bring a smile to our faces ...without the tears... he would want it that way... We are sorry to say goodbye.. We will miss him... Robert passed away on Saturday, November 19, 2011 in Dawson Creek, B.C. at the age of 65 years. A prayer service was held on Friday November 25, at 7:00 pm at Reynars Funeral Chapel. A funeral service was held on Saturday, November 26, at 11:00 am at Reynars Funeral Chapel, Fr. Michael Anyasoro officiated, interment will be at a later date. Very Respectfully Reynars Funeral Home & Crematorium
