Lieselotte Berthold

Obituary of Lieselotte Frieda Berthold

Liese was born April 26, 1933, in Schmachtenhagen, Ost Brandenburg, Germany, to Aduart (Adward) Schmidtke and Emma Choitz. She had an older sister Irmgard and three brothers, Kurt and then two brothers of whom were unknown to her. When Liese was 2 years old, her father died in the war. In 1956, Liese immigrated to Canada by ship on the Arosa Kulm #01. She was a seamstress by trade and also worked as a Nurse's aid. She spent a couple years in Lloydminster, met her future husband, Eckhardt and in 1958 moved to Dawson Creek where she raised her family. Liese always took pride in everything she did from cleaning house, to growing a vegetable garden, pruning flowers and especially raising and keeping us kids, in-line. All she had to do and say was "dad will be home any minute" and we would all be on our best behaviour. She was quite clever that way. She also, adored animals and accepted them whether she wanted to or not, strays and all. Liese, who soon became "Mumsy" always had an abundance of food in the house. It didn't matter what time it was, or whether you were hungry or not, there was always a plate of sandwiches, or baked goods for everyone to devour. And, who could forget, a fantastic "cup of coffee". Always the best! In her late 30's, Liese got her driver's licence, which opened a new world for her and allowed her to venture out more often. Although she thoroughly enjoyed this, she equally enjoyed being chauffeured. She worked at various places outside the home, including the Curling Rink for 25 years. Although she worked 'evenings' and well into the 'morning' hours, she loved every minute of it. Especially during Curling Bonspiels, "fun" was held by all! In 1996, approximately 7-years after the East Berlin wall came down, she went to Germany to visit her relatives, many of whom she didn't know existed, especially her sister. Finally, after 40-years! So many mixed emotions. Mumsy was full of goodness and was a loyal, dedicated, hardworking lady, who was respected and liked by all. We will take comfort and treasure the many loving memories we shared. We miss you Mumsy. Liese is survived and greatly missed by her children Edda, Gordon (Tanya), Benny, Annette (Terry), along with her special grandson Kolten and numerous relatives in Germany. She was predeceased by her husband, Eckhardt in January 2005 and treasured grandson, Kristopher in June 2010, along with her mother, Emma, father, Aduart and her siblings. Liese passed away on Sunday, March 4, 2012 in Dawson Creek at the age of 78 years. With respect to Liese's wishes no formal funeral service will be held. For friends so wishing, donations may be made in memory of Liese to a charity of your choice or to the local SPCA. Very Respectfully, Reynars Funeral Home & Crematorium.
