Obituary of Simon Redhead
Simon Redhead was born on January 3, 1921 in Sturgeon Lake AB. He was called home on Sept, 5, 2012 at the age of 91.
Simon spent 10 years in a residential school and upon finishing his schooling he stayed at his home reserve for a period of time before making his way to Chetwynd in 1936. During his journey to Moberly Lake his brother Slim came to pick him up the first part of his journey was by car to Grande Prairie AB, from their they took a train to Dawson Creek, then jumped on board with the mail man then walked from there. There was no bridge at East Pine they rode in a basket on a cable.
Simon was a skilled hunter and trapper and he loved the bush life. The family will fondly remember the cabin that he spent his summers and teaching the family survival skills, hunting, dry meat making and trapping.
He worked on the Hart Highway but also worked for many small mills that dotted the peace country side, PGE rail, Canfor and his last job was for Jim Grant until he was 70 years old. Simon enjoyed the bush work and the handling of a power saw.
He had a passion for sports such as hockey, baseball, boxing, and chuck wagon races. Simon was an excellent athlete and put all his children in some kind of sports. He enjoyed his music and was an excellent musician he played the violin, guitar, banjo, mandolin, accordion, harmonica and the spoons. He loved to jig and taught whoever wanted to learn how to jig with the proper techniques required.
Simon was a man of many stories, he loved to tell stories and keep you amused by what he did "back in the day".
In 1947 Simon married the love of his life Victoria they were married for 51 years. Together they had 11 children that they raise at Moccasin Flats, near the present airport.
Simon passed away on Wednesday, September 5, 2012 in Chetwynd, BC. at the age of 91 years.
A wake was held on Tuesday, September 11, 2012 at 7:00 pm, at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall Chetwynd, BC.
A funeral service was held on Wednesday, September 12, at 11:00 am, at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall, Pastor Dennis Helset officiated. Interment followed in the Tuscoola Mountain Cemetery, Chetwynd, BC.
Simon was predeceased by his loving Wife; Victoria of 51 years, Children; Doug, Wayne, Leona, Sharon and Lance.
Simon will be fondly remembered by all his Children; Darlene (Albert), Russell, Bruce, Geraldine, Leatha, Ruby, Billy-Joe, Joanne (Jose) and Jason,25 grandchildren,41 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great. Two Sisters Nancy Campbell and Mary Redhead.
