Obituary of Les Comer

Ernest Lesley was the third of four children born to Ted and Ruby Comer on Oct. 31, 1931 in Cortez, Colorado. Les met the love of his life, Alice, at Grenada Union High School in Colorado. After a celebrated career as a Marine, Les came home with an honourable discharge. He married his true love Alice on July 25, 1954. Les and Alice were blessed on Aug 6, 1955, when their first daughter Deborah was born in Lamar, Colorado. Second cherished daughter, Patricia, with her dad's dark hair, was born on Oct. 3, 1957, third daughter, Theresa, was born February 27, 1961, or February 28 according to her dad, because that was when he heard her for the first time. Les provided for his growing family with working a variety of jobs such as a farmer, carpenter, in a flour mill, driving trucks for farmers around Lamar, and moved the young family to Beunavista, to work at Climax Mines. Les started in the mines, but soon started attending a trade school in his off time, and a short year later obtained his Welding Certificate and moved to work in the welding shop at Climax Mines. Les' stubbornness finally provided, to his satisfaction; the "good life" for his family. Les participated in a 6 month strike against Climax while his wife was pregnant with their fourth child, but left the picket line to find work as a truck driver. They welcomed their first son, David, on December 23, 1962. Their family was completed when red haired, Larry Wayne was born June 13, 1964. With growing children and family road trips under their belts, Les and Alice bought land in Tomslake, BC in 1968. Les waited to celebrate 10 years at Climax Mines before moving his family of seven to their awaiting home and new life in Tomslake in 1971. Les farmed with help from his children and was an owner/operator for Trimac Transportation. He was always very involved; he rallied for his adopted community of Tomslake to have a gym at the school and a fire department. He personally collected donations for the gym after working long days trucking. In 1991, Les suffered a stroke this took away some abilities in his right side, and his ability to speak. He was such a strong, stubborn man losing a lot of the use of his right hand wasn't a big deal and although his 30 year career with Trimac ended, he would still drive his blue pick-up and was the "silent" head of Tumbleweed Construction (the company that Les and his two sons Dave and Larry started in 1981). Les always talked about spending his winters in Arizona once he retired, and Alice made sure that he got to. They travelled to Arizona every winter from 1994-2007 only missing one winter. They also travelled together to well over 12 states, Mexico and western Canada. Les was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was an extremely hard worker and always put his family first. He had a full and incredible life, and he will be missed, but not ever forgotten. Les passed away on Monday, February 11, 2013 in Dawson Creek, at the age of 81 years. A memorial service was held on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at 3:00 pm from Reynars Funeral Chapel, Pastor Kevin Throness officiated. Interment will be at a later date.
