Obituary of Agnes Roberta Campbell Smith

Agnes Roberta Campbell Smith (Mingo) Aka Bunny and/or Smitty 1924 - 2013 Agnes Roberta Campbell Smith was born August 22, 1924 in Innisfail, AB and passed away September 12, 2013 at the age of 89. She was the youngest of 8 children born to Thomas and Agnes Smith. She grew up on a farm in the area just west of Progress, BC known as Bon Accord where she made many lifelong friends. During this time, she was given the nickname Bunny and during her working years she acquired the nickname Smitty. Unfortunately, Mom's parents both passed away by the time she was 18. Although she was already grown, her oldest sister Miari stepped in to serve as a replacement Mom and they formed a very special bond. Growing up with several older sisters, Mom managed to avoid household chores and spent a lot of time helping outside. She loved being in the barn with her brothers and the horses. Mom went to Normal school to train to be a teacher. She held a couple of different teaching positions including one at Pouce Coupe School. Before long, she moved on to other interests. She often spoke of her time in Lower Post where she worked for a Mr. Christie. The many places she worked over the years included the bank, McDonald's Consolidated Warehouse, MacLeod's Hardware, Dawson Creek Sash and Door, Northern Metallic Sales, and the George Dawson Inn. She lived two years in Nova Scotia, before Dad knowing he was seriously ill moved her home to her beloved Peace River country. After his passing, she showed her strength of character and provided strong support for her two remaining teenagers at home. After retirement, Mom was able to make several trips south to visit her siblings. She loved family and friends and sharing a good laugh. She loved cards, painted, and was an avid reader. She was very independent and stayed in her own home until she moved to Rotary Manor at 87. She was comfortable there, grew to love the staff, and provided them with many laughs. We are extremely grateful for the loving care they provided - nurses, housekeeping, facilities and activities staff. Agnes Roberta Campbell Smith was predeceased by her partner Ralph Mingo, her parents Thomas and Agnes Smith, her brothers Ian (Edith) Smith and Magnus "Jiggs" Smith, her sisters Miari (Alec) Hamilton, Laura (Marvin Olsen) Gray, Phyllis (Charles) Bruce, Kay (Charles) Senay, and Jean (John)Taylor. Bunny/ Smitty is survived by her daughters Vivienne (Danny) Mills and Debbie Mingo (Alan Peters); sons Jerry (Terri) Smith and Bruce Mingo; grandchildren Tanya (Todd) Cantlon and Dale Mills (Linda Johnston), Todd Mingo and Jamie Peters, Ashlee Smith and Allyse Smith; great-grandchildren Tori and Tristan Cantlon, Tyler Johnston and Trevor Broad; sisters-in-law Emily Smith, Mildred Fall, Gladys Mingo, and Sheila MacPherson; brothers-in-law Eloi Allain and Cecil Mingo; and numerous nieces and nephews. With a wag of her finger (and anyone who knew Mom knew that wagging finger), Mom always said, "You're going to miss me when I'm gone." And guess what? She's right again. She touched many lives and will be missed by many. For friends wishing to do so, donations may be made in memory of Bunny/Smitty to: Rotary Manor, 1121 - 90th Avenue Dawson Creek, BC V1G 5A3. A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 28, 2013 at Bergeron's Funeral Home at 11 am.
