Obituary of Courtney John Weightman

Corky Weightman, a lifelong resident of Chetwynd, B.C. passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 in Chetwynd at the age of 59 years. Corky was born to Corinne in Regina, Saskatchewan on July 6, 1954 and over the next few years lived in Vancouver and Powell River. He eventually landed in Chetwynd in 1960, here he spent the remainder of his school years. After school Corky moved to Mackenzie, B.C. where he completed an apprenticeship in the welding trade in the forest industry. Corky apprenticed under a strict German immigrant tradesman with very high standards, and as a result he developed into the same kind of perfectionist. He started working at Westcoast Transmission in Taylor and ultimately settling in as a welder at their Pine River Gas Plant from 1981-2010. He became a Team Leader in Maintenance for a number of years and then the Team Leader for Planning and Maintenance. Corky met Venessa one night and spent the next day raving about how he met the love of his life. When asked who it was he replied, "I can't say - she doesn't know yet." It wasn't until later that the two of them were discovered having dinner together. They had been together since 1981 and remained devoted to each other since. They welcomed two boys; Mitch in 1985 and Brad in 1986. Corky taught the boys to ski, and they taught him how to snowboard. Over the years Corky never stopped joining the game - teaching his boys to golf, water ski, play baseball and countless trips to the ski hill. When the boys started to play hockey, Corky couldn't skate so he served a term as Minor Hockey President. Corky also provided valuable life lessons to his children. He didn't come home with work stress, instead he brought home a strong work ethic and a relentless drive to tackle new projects. His final project was building and completing their house at Moberly Lake. Corky was ill for two years. During that time he fought for health and in the end was defeated. The care he received from his diagnosis to the end was special. A special thanks goes to the Chetwynd Hospital doctors, staff and nurses while Corky was in Palliative Care. Corky was predeceased by his brother Robert. Corky is survived by his loving wife Venessa, sons Mitch and Brad, mother Corinne and stepfather Jerry, brothers; Barry (Helen), Dennis (Helene) and Bryan (Eileen), as well as many nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at 1:00 pm at the Chetwynd Fellowship Baptist Church. Pastor Bill Evans officiated. Interment followed in the Tuscoola Mountain Cemetery. For friends so wishing, donations may be made in memory of Corky to the Chetwynd Hospital Foundation Box 121 Chetwynd, B.C. V0C 1J0. "Remember Yesterday... Dream About Tomorrow... But Live Today."
