I first met John in January of 1963 when I was hired as a rooky fireman with the City of Dawson Creek. I was very fortunate after about 2 years of service to be partnered with john on night shifts. He was a great teacher and mentor and many of these principals are still with me today. John loved music, in particular piano which was great for me as I almost wore out the beautiful upright piano in the fire-hall rec-room practicing my brains out with youthful vigor. John eventually purchased the piano, taught himself how to play and enjoyed this immensely. I left the fire service in 1969 and my family and I moved from Dawson Creek in 1983 but stayed in touch with John over the years. Sadly I had not spoken with him in quite some time. John was a true friend and I will miss him deeply. My sincerest condolences to his family.

So sorry to hear of John's passing. He was a mountain of information. When I worked at Ted's Service he would talk for hours about rock formations, tractors and weather patterns. Restoring the fire trucks at Pioneer Village, the tractors at Beaverlodge. I have no idea how many times Don and I phoned him when we had tractor problems. He knew them inside and out. I don't think he ever drove past a hitchhiker with out stopping and would go out of his way to see they got to where they were going even if it meant driving them there himself. One of my saddest memories was at the Beaverlodge pioneer days. He had been working for weeks getting the tractors ready for the parade. That day, as it got time for the parade to start he helped every one get the tractor they were driving running and out on the track. When he went to get his tractor, it wouldn't start. After all his work he didn't even get to drive in the parade. But he came and stood beside my grandkids telling them about each tractor as they drove around and around the track. He missed out but my grandchildren learned a lot that day. He was a good friend and we will miss him.
