Memories at Boundary Lake

I’m so sorry to hear about Greg’s passing and also so sorry that I did not attend the from what I hear, wonderful service.

I so fondly remember Greg’s constant smile and forever quickness to deliver the perfect one liner, we just had so much fun working together out at the old Suncor Boundary Lake Gas Plant.

Greg was just about always able to come out on top of a good round of teasing however there was one time that I do remember he and I both being quite tidally duped by one of our coworkers at the Plant by Doug Deck. It went something like this; Doug who was quite often the victim of Greg and I’s teasing went into the back electrical room, where for some reason had a door that could be locked from the outside, subsequently locking whoever was in the electrical room in, with the only means of escape being the door out the back of the room to the outdoors. The plot started with Doug dropping a few hints around the control room that he was quite good at picking locks. After Greg and I took the bait and said there was no way he could pick the lock to the electrical room, Greg and I locked Doug in and sat back to chuckle and speculate on how long we would leave him in there before we let him out or he was forced to walk around the office, via the back door in the snow, in his socks, because we didn’t lock him up with any shoes. Well you can imagine the absolute shock to Greg and I when after a considerable amount of fumbling with the paper clip he had armed himself with popped open the door! Wow, well when Greg and I got our mouths shut, we let Doug know how great he was and were both eager to give the lock picking program a go, with me going first. Doug came with me into the electrical room to instruct me on the finer details of picking locks, with Greg making sure the door was securely locked from the other side. I skillfully plied my lock picking skills and after some time with zero success was about to give up when Doug showed me the skills required to pick the lock. Doug first put the paper clip in and proceeded to wiggle and grind it around in the key hole. After he had made the required amount of effort, or should I say noise, he removed the paper clip and opened the door with the spare key he had found in the office desk!!! Way too funny. We repeated the prank with Greg and all had a great laugh, a laugh that I repeat to myself every time I think of my great years at the Suncor Gas Plant with Greg Herman.

On a more professional note, I also remember Greg and I sitting around the control room one day talking about how fast the spark plugs could be changed on our 7042 Waukesha compressor. Greg and I made our plan, we set out all the new spark plugs on the heads of the compressor, all 12 of them, loosened the plug wires to barely the last thread or so, all with the unit still on line. I will have to add that this was at a point in time that by now would be labeled “the good old days!” As I am completely certain that should such a stunt be attempted in this day and age that Greg and I would have our employment promptly terminated! These large compressors have an external lubrication pump and this lubrication pump is required to run for a period of time after the compressor is shut down (post lube) and again before the compressor will start to turn over to start (pre lube). The post and pre lube times on this unit, if memory serves me correctly was 90 seconds. When Greg and I were all ready to change our respective six spark plugs each we hit the stop button and flew into action, I watched the post lube timer as it ran out and the second that it did I hit start, starting the pre lube count down, at which point Greg and I still had half the sparkplugs lying on the heads. We yelled to each other back and forth over the massive V12 compressor, giving the play by play on how we were doing and with only seconds to spare before the starter engaged, we both yelled good to go, the starter slammed in, the compressor fired up and we had done it! We changed all 12 spark plugs on a 7042 Waukesha in under three minutes, what a rush!

Well I hope you are all managing as well as could be hoped for, and that these two little remembrances will in some way help with this difficult time and maybe even allow a chuckle or two.

Fondly remembering Greg,

Dean Wilfur

Elsa, my deepest condolences to you and your family. I worked with Greg for 3 years with Nexen in Fort Nelson, where he was a valuable member of our team and a good friend. I learned so much from him about our industry, but even more about life. Greg had an unshakable optimism that was truly inspiring, and uncanny ability to lighten up any situation. He truly valued relationships and was gifted at dealing with people. I am so thankful to have been able to see him a few days before his passing. Thank you again for allowing me that time with him. I will miss Greg deeply, but his smile, laughter, and sense of humor will be remembered always. Sincerely, Brock Johnson
