Obituary of Armand Pouliot

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Armand Pouliot, a resident of Dawson Creek, BC formerly of Port Alberni, BC. Armand passed away peacefully with family by his side on Saturday, May 12, 2018 in Rotary Manor at the age of 89 years. Armand Antonio Joseph Pouliot was born on his familys farm near Debden, Saskatchewan on January 5, 1929. Armand was the seventh of eighteen children born to Albert and Angeline Pouliot. As a young man of 22 years, Armand bought his own parcels of land, broke them and made it into productive farmland. He felt this work and accomplishment left him in good stead for his future and positive outlook. When he was 24 years old, Armand married the love of his life, Fernande Anita Marie Chretien on October 26, 1953. She would be such an extremely important part of his life until her passing 35 years later in 1988. Armand moved from his farm in Saskatchewan to Port Alberni, BC in 1965 with his young family of Fernande, their son Ken and their daughter Leanne. They chose to move there looking for better opportunities for their future and many family members were also making the migration west. The farm was never far away from his heart. Armand went on to work for the City of Port Alberni for 26 years. He drove a garbage truck which allowed him the opportunity to meet the people on his route and become well known and well liked. Armand and his family enjoyed weekends and the chance to camp with their extended family. From Parksville and Toquart Bay on Vancouver Island to their annual trips to Saskatchewan, the Pouliot RV rolled on. Visiting family along the way were the highlights and kept their relationships strong. Over the years Armand acquired the hobby of woodworking, specifically making burl tables, pictures frames and clocks. He would spend hours and days making new pieces which he would love to show off and even sell. His love of farming and seeing the seasons leading up to and including harvest were some of his favorites. When he was still able to drive he would go out to Rolla or Doe River and watch as the crops came off. Armand considered himself a Jack of all trades, always happy and willing to help out no matter the task or job at hand; even though at times it would actually put you a little behind to redo or fix what he had already just fixed. He lived with an infectious enthusiasm for life. He took great pleasure in teasing and playing jokes on people. He was generous with his time and even more so with his simple farmer wisdom. Armand was a very devout man, going to church every Sunday and had an unwavering faith in his God. God, faith, and family were his most treasured possessions, besides his precious burl woodwork. A Celebration of Armands Life was held on Friday, May 18, 2018 at 1:00 PM at Reynars Chapel. Pauline Haycock officiated. Armand will be laid to rest next to his loving wife, Fernande, and son, Kenneth Pouliot, in Port Alberni at a later date. For friends so wishing, donations may be made in memory of Armand to the Alzheimers Society of BC, Provincial Office, #300-828 West 8 Avenue, Vancouver, BC V5Z1EZ.
