Obituary of June Jones

June Emma Jones, a long time resident of Dawson Creek, BC, passed away on Thursday, July 19, 2018 in the Dawson Creek & District Hospital, at the age of 100 years. June married Cecil Jones in Breton, AB on May 7, 1938 and their only child, Eldine June was born on October 24 that same year. The tiny family chased the lumber camps and threshing crews around AB for many years. June cooked for the crews whenever the work was available. Finally in 1951, June had enough and her and Cecil filed on a homestead west of Dawson Creek, which they proved up and eventually filled on a second quarter that they also proved up. This is where they built the home that they lived in until age and health required them to move to town. In the early years June ran the homestead while Cecil was working off the farm at whatever he could find to help pay the bills. That left June growing the garden, raising the livestock and helping chase a couple of grandchildren when time allowed. There was lots of heavy and hard work to do, she was always there to do her share and more. Her first experience with running water in her home was when they moved to Dawson Creek in 1999. June had many excellent qualities, one of which she was an extraordinary rifle shot. Inspiring those who knew her, young and old, to hone their own shooting skills. Everett remembers her and several others shooting at a paper plate in the fast running current of the river rapids, visible pieces chipping off the plate more than once when it was her turn with the gun. June never had a drivers license, but that certainly didnt stop her from driving around the farm, which many a skinned poplar tree can attest to. In her later years, she took on some things that she never had the opportunity to try out when she was younger, one was that she bought herself a quad and learned to ride. She went on a 2 night rafting trip on the East Pine River with Everett and Rennette. It was on that trip that Rennette kicked over all her brownie points as she very abruptly told Granny to Shut up, as she had drawn the attention of a startled black bear that was drinking from the rivers edge in very close proximity to the raft. Everyone had been distracted by the four other bears on the far bank of the river. In 2007, Pennie, Boyde, Everett and Rennette took Granny on the adventure of her life, a three week road trip to Whitehorse, Yukon. This trip was much enjoyed by all. On that trip, this 89 year old woman who was deathly afraid of water, took herself in hand and climbed into a canoe and went out on the lake. She was amazing! That was her first and only canoe ride although she would have gone again if she had the opportunity. Granny was an awesome cook, she seemed to be able to make a pot of potatoes and moose roast stretch to feed a house full of people whenever they showed up, which was often, and almost every Sunday afternoon. Her faith in her religion was unwavering and she stood by it solidly! The only thing she wanted from home, on her last stay in the hospital, was her bible. June was predeceased by her loving husband; Cecil, daughter; Eldine and great-granddaughter; Tara Lynn. We, her family would like to thank her for her skills, knowledge, inspiration and feistiness that she left behind and passed down. Gone but never forgotten. A Funeral service was held on Friday, July 27, 2018 at 1:00 pm, at Reynars Funeral Chapel. Pauline Haycock officiated. June was laid to rest next to her husband in the Brookside Cemetery, Dawson Creek, BC.
