Obituary of Doreen Vopicka

Doreen Vopicka (nee Bertelson) November 17, 1927 - September 22, 2018 Doreen passed away peacefully in her 91st year on Saturday, September 22 at the Orchard Walk Retirement Community in Ottawa, Ontario. Doreen is the beloved wife of the late Frank Vopicka and much-loved only daughter of Mae and Harry Bertelson. Doreen was raised in Toronto and was very close to her predeceased cousin Margaret Comstive (nee Baker). In 1948 Doreen married Frank who was raised in Farmington and in 1956 they moved there to homestead. Her Toronto friends and family were always fascinated by the relative pioneer lifestyle and enjoyed hearing about Doreen (a "city girl") and Frank's adventures in farming, homesteading, hunting, and travelling, for Doreen was a voracious letter writer. Doreen was quick to laugh, a much-gifted crafter and master of all needlework; her hands never rested. Every Christmas family and friends were delighted to receive her latest handmade works of art. Doreen also loved all animals and was always happy, smiling and laughing when there was a dog present. Doreen continued her travels with friends and family after Frank passed away in 1999 (after a long battle with Alzheimer's) and, with long-time friends in and around Dawson Creek, she continued to enjoy cards and crafts and even became an avid bowler. In 2012 she returned to Ontario to be closer to family. Doreen is survived and will be missed by dear friends in and around Dawson Creek, new acquaintances in Ottawa, Margaret's children Laural Ross (Murray) and Denise Short (Terry) and Denise's two daughters Laural and Taryn. A private celebration of life will be held with family in Ottawa and Doreen will be buried in the Mountain View Cemetery in Sunrise Valley. A special thanks to the nurses and staff at the Orchard Walk Retirement Community for their compassionate care and support. Doreen requested that expressions of sympathy may be made by donation the Alzheimer Society of Canada, #300 - 828 West 8 Avenue, Vancouver, British Columbia, V5Z 1E2. Interment Mountain View Cemetery - Sunrise Valley 247 Rd DAWSON CREEK, British Columbia, Canada
