Obituary of Steve Remenyk

Steve Remenyk 1928 - 2018 Steve was born on April 5th, 1928 in Ivankew, Ukraine and came to Canada in 1932 at 4 years of age. His mother Sophia, sister Mary, brother Mike left Ukraine by train and went to Centrum, Belgium then to Halifax, Canada by boat. This all took about 2 weeks or so, not sure. They then left by "Immigrant Train" to Pouce Coupe which took 10 days, then a kind neighbor took them to their Bonanza Farm. He did remember sneaking away from his mom and sneaking up on top of the boat. He said he remembered climbing up the railing to see the ocean water, slipping and nearly falling into the ocean. Thank god there was a sailor behind him and caught him from falling into the water. Life was hard in Canada but, by working together, they had a good life. Steve met Irene Machnee in 1952 and got married in 1955. They had three children, Wayne, Carol and Darcy. They all worked together and played together. They loved going to Edmonton exhibition for a holiday and especially, the giant slide that now looks like a small bump. They also took the children on trips to Manitoba, Saskatchewan, through Alberta and into British Columbia. In later years, Steve and Irene went to Ukraine twice and three times to Australia. Steve loved his seven grandchildren and enjoyed playing with them. When one got hurt they would show Gido the hurt, he would say "that's okay we'll just cut it off at the nick." Gido had a cure for everything. He was very proud of the grandchildren finishing school, college and university, and often told them they were "smarter than the average bear." Steve was very community minded and helped where he could. He also enjoyed playing horseshoes and curling. Steve was also very proud of all the trophies he won. Steve was also very proud of receiving the Farm Family Award. Steve and Irene celebrated their 63rd anniversary on August 20th in hospital with their children and a few grandchildren. He will be dearly missed, especially his sense of humor. God Bless you Steve, and rest in peace. A funeral service was held on October 2, 2018 at Bonanza Hall. Interment followed in the Hillhaven Cemetery in Bonanza. Expressions of sympathy may be made by donation to Rotary Manor Care Facility, 1121 - 90 Avenue, Dawson Creek, British Columbia, V1G 5A3.
