I knew Big Brian in the late 1970s when we lived in MacKenzie House at the University of New Brunswick. He was a great guy, hardworking and serious about his studies, and yet he coupled a wicked dry sense of humor with an in-born disdain for BS. We had many fine adventures at UNB and in the first few years after graduation. Then we lost touch (which I regret very much) and I only found his obituary while googling in response to a "I wonder whatever happened to . . ." thought. I am not at all surprised that he became a loving family man and respected forester. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

RIP Brian. Such a nice guy. A gentle giant. I miss the bush trips we used to take together. Too young to go.

I worked with Brian for a number of years, first in Fort St John where I was the timber guy and he was the silviculture guy, and we would always get into some friendly arguments as to why we are logging a certain piece of territory that was going to be difficult to regenerate. We had some great field trips while we both worked in Fort St John and sadly our plans of going to revisit a number of areas that were logged and regenerated after we retired just didn't materialize. He would have loved that. Our second encounter was in Dawson Creek, BC Timber Sales was a new entity and I was just hired to be his second hand man. We worked quite closely together for a number of years in Dawson Creek and he was so dedicated to managing his staff and making sure everything was working the way it was meant. He was a great colleague and friend. He did have a few eccentric quirks as I remember when he left Fort St John to a position in the Prince Rupert, he had left behind in his desk a drawer full of empty Bic pens, I'm sure there was well over a hundred of these completely used Bic pens. I boxed them all up and sent them to him. Brian always got in to the habit of writing in his black books the going ons of every day he worked, there was so much writing that on occasion he would even be writing in the margins. Not sure if he kept of all these books but they would be a great snapshot of what was going in with him back then. He must have had dozens of these, hope they make a keepsake for someone. Brian you will be missed and your departure in this world came much sooner than anticipated.

I was fortunate to have worked with Brian when he was R.O-Silviculture in Ft St John, and again when he returned to the northeast as BCTS Manager. He was very dedicated to his work, and even more so to the staff he supervised. Many of us started counting down to retirement as the day drew nearer, but Brian wins the prize for the longest running count down. It is so sad he got short changed in this chapter of his life. I think I will most remember Brian’s incredible sense of humour, how dry he could be, and the straight-faced look he would deliver it with. I’m so glad I knew him and so very sad he has led us.

Brian was a kind and generous Better at Home volunteer who dedicated time and energy to mow the lawns of seniors. The seniors loved him. He will be greatly missed by many. Linda Studley/Better at Home Coordinator.
