Obituary of Kenneth Andre Hall

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Kenneth "Ken" Hall, a longtime resident of Dawson Creek, British Columbia, on Friday, March 1, 2024, at the age of 85 years.

Ken was born in Edmonton on April 29, 1938, to parents Robert and Marguerite. Ken remembered that his family moved a lot in his early years. At the age of 11 his family settled on the North Shore. Ken’s family lived in several locations in North and West Vancouver and In February of 1949 the family welcomed baby brother Bobby.

Ken attended High School in North Vancouver and loved to talk about the many adventures he had with his school buddies. He had some great and hair-raising stories of skiing on the North Shore mountains, with his friends, during those early years.

After High School Ken worked for IBM as a typewriter technician. Ken quit this job to attend UBC and obtain his teaching degree. He put himself through university by commercial fishing in the summers and enjoyed it so much he took a year break from university to continue fishing. He fished on such boats as the Silver Viking, Waterfall, Dover B and BC Clipper. Ken married first wife Linda Walkem during this time.

As a second-year teacher Ken was hired to teach at Central Junior High in 1968. During these first few years in Dawson Creek, Ken and his wife welcomed daughter Teresa and son Jay. The couple divorced but continued to raise their children in the Dawson Creek area.

In 1979 Ken married Linda Knutsen and the couple welcomed daughters Freya and Karina to add to the family.

While originally hired to teach Science and Math, Ken worked for years as the woodwork teacher at Central Junior High and later as a Core 8 teacher when Central became a Middle School. Ken retired from teaching in 1995. He enjoyed the many colleagues he worked with over the years and the many friends he made. He always enjoyed stopping to talk to former students that he would meet around town and appreciated those that continued to stop by for visits over the years.

When not teaching Ken kept himself busy farming cattle and putting up hay, building up his farm, building boats as well as being an avid hunter. Over the years Ken struggled with various health issues but was very tough and resilient and he never gave up pursuing the activities he loved.

Ken loved his family, and he loved the homestead he built for them. His roots grew deep in the Peace River Country and his farm home was his favourite place to be.

He was well loved and will be dearly missed.

Ken is survived by his wife Linda; children Teresa (Marcus), Jay (Roxie), Freya (Denton), Karina (Chris); grandchildren Calvin, Ayla, Damon, Molli, Elsie; brother Bob; nephews Clayton, Geoff; nieces Megan, Kirsten; as well as many extended family members and friends.

A Celebration Of Life for Ken will be held at Reynars Funeral Chapel on Monday, April 29, 2024 at 11:00 am. Pauline Haycock will officiate.  Interment will take place at a later date.
