Obituary of Irene Margaret Sekyer
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Irene Margaret Sekyer, a longtime resident of Dawson Creek, British Columbia on Friday, January 12, 2024, at the age of 76 years.
Irene was born in Midale, Saskatchewan. Her family lived briefly in Saskatchewan and New Westminster. After a trip to Scotland with her mother and brother, they returned to live in Dawson Creek in 1951. It was in Dawson Creek where she met and married Gary. They continued to live there and raise their two sons Dean and Spencer.
When both her sons were in school, she decided to find something to do. She started by volunteering in the library at Grandview School, which soon became a part-time, then full-time job. Some thirty-three years later, she retired from School District #59. She always appreciated the opportunities that these positions gave her, but she mostly appreciated the many friends she made at work over those years.
Her main focus in life was her family, even though she tried her hand at a few sports. Her favorite choice however, was as a spectator watching her sons and grandsons.
With the birth of her grandsons, she tried to spend as much time as possible with them. A saying that accurately describes that would be as follows, “there is nothing like the enthusiasm of the young to make your day”.
Irene was predeceased by her parents Melvin in 1992 and Betty in 1999; brother Rodger in 2019; and niece Sheri in 2008.
Irene is survived by her loving husband Gary; sons Dean, Spencer (Christie); grandsons Logan, Benji, and Anders; nieces Julie (Russ) Remple, Lori (Jeff) Morris; sisters in-law Audrey Cowgar, and Loretta Olenyk.
No formal service will be held at this time.
