Obituary of Julie Magusin

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Julie Magusin, a longtime resident of Dawson Creek, British Columbia, on Thursday, July 6, 2023, at the age of 89 years

Julie was born in Falher, Alberta on May 14, 1934, to parents Omer and Marie-Louise Berube, a baby sister to Collette and sister to 12 other siblings.  Julie’s dad was a carpenter and barber. The family packed and moved several times. Julie has brothers and sisters born in Quebec, Ontario, Alberta, and the youngest ones here in Dawson Creek.

Julie loved to play the guitar and one day it was broken by the younger kids playing.  Julie managed to get a new one and it was cherished. It was kept hidden from her own children and only came out and was played on special occasions.

Julie left school in Grade 10 and started a career in the pressing room at the local dry cleaners, where she worked with her future sister-in-law, Theresa.  Theresa tried to match Julie up with her brother, Joe Magusin, Julie was having nothing to do with that.  Joe finally had to dent her car to meet her.

After that day, he was always ‘her Joe’; they were married in 1960.

Joe and Julie Magusin started their life together in Dawson Creek, but Joe’s heart was in Farmington. They soon moved onto the family farm, with the help of Joe’s younger brother Peter. Joe and Peter’s parents wanted to retire from farming.

They happily raised all four of their children there. Patricia came in 1962, Omer in 1963, Mary in 1964, and Kasara in 1965. The old farmhouse was full - with only wood heat, no electricity or running water - and filled with love.  Julie would always welcome any visitor or family with open arms and food that was gathered, raised, or grown on the farm.  Julie loved company. In 1969, power came to the old log house, but Julie did not get running water or diesel heat until a new log house was built in 1978.

Julie's greatest wishes were to be married for 50 years (Julie and Joe made it to 58 years,) and to be a grandmother.

Julie is survived by her children, Omer (Janet), Mary, and Kasara (Abbey).  She was very proud of her grandchildren: DJ (Anna), Matt (Lenore), Samantha (Jessie), and Elizabeth. Julie will get to watch her great-grandchildren grow from Heaven: Grantley, Yulamay, Isabelle, Eloise, and Lillian.

Julie lived everyday to the fullest and taught her family how to be the best person they could be, always have faith in God, look for the silver lining, find true love, and look after your loved ones.  She lovingly looked after ‘her Joe’ when he was hurt in 1969 and with Kasara’s help, after his stroke in 1990.

Julie lived her life forwards, then Alzheimer’s forced her to live it backwards. We pray that her journey to heaven on July 6th, was smooth and only added happy memories – Julie is now holding Joe and Pat’s hands and they are surrounded by God’s loving arms.

A private family service will be held.  Interment to follow in the Mountain View Sunrise Valley Cemetery.  Julie's family invite everyone to share this day with them starting at noon on the family farm.

For friends so wishing, donations may be made in memory of Julie to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Suite #200-885 Dunsmuir Street, Vancouver BC, V6C 1N5
