Obituary of Ronald John Allen
Ronald John Allen was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on December 9, 1929 to Marge and George Allen. He was a big brother to Doug and Marjorie.
In 1943, grandpa and his brother were conscripted, and became boy soldiers at the age of 13 and 14 in Prince Rupert. Grandpa was a member of the 1st Battalion Prince Rupert Regiment Militia.
The family moved back to Winnipeg and Grandpa went back to school and worked as a mechanic trainee. In the spring of 1948, he decided to join the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Military Equipment Technician and served with the #2 Construction and Maintenance Unit for over four years.
During this time Grandpa met his love, Lois, on a double date. Unfortunately Grandpa's date on this evening was not Grandma, but there must have been some sparks, as they were engaged a year later.
Grandpa re-mustered to aircrew in August of 1952. He then went to London Ontario for officers training, later to be transferred to Claresholm, Alberta for pilots training where he received his wings in June 1953. In that same month Grandma and Grandpa were married in Calgary. Grandpa began his helicopter training in Rivers, Manitoba in 1955.
On October 23, 1955 a Sikorsky helicopter dropped off in Calgary, the first of their four daughters, Heather.
In 1956 the family relocated to Ottawa and Grandpa was in the 108 Helicopter Squadron. On November 18, the Sikorsky made another drop; their second daughter, Terry, was born.
In December of 1958 Grandpa's contract ended with the Royal Canadian Air Force, after 12 years of service. On May 28, 1961 Sikorsky made a 3rd fly by and dropped Cindy off in Calgary.
In 1965 Grandpa finished his job with Hudson Bay Mining and took a new job in Watson Lake with Northwest Helicopters. During this time was the final Sikorsky drop off. Lisa was born June 19, 1966. It was then Grandma purchased a house in Dawson Creek and firmly stated to Grandpa, "Ronald, this is where we are living".
After owning Pacific 66 bulk stations, Aero Asphalt Paving and operating Aztec Piper Airplane (which of course, he strictly used for business), Grandpa retired at the age of 55.
Ron passed away on August 1, 2008 in Dawson Creek at the age of 78 years.
He was predeceased by his mother, Marge Allen. He is survived by his wife, Lois, Daughters, Heather (Dale) Phillips, Terry Allen, Cindy (Randy) Curtain, and Lisa Allen, 5 Grandchildren and 1 Great Grandchild, Brother; McDougal Allen and Sister; Margaret Huculak.
