Obituary of Darwin Donald Dunbar

Darwin Dunbar, a farmer/rancher and life-long resident of Groundbirch, BC, died Wednesday, December 06, 2023, at the age of 87 at the Dawson Creek and District Hospital in Dawson Creek BC.  

 

Darwin is survived by his sons Donald Dunbar, Darren (Barbie) Dunbar and Denton (Freya) Dunbar; brother Ancil Dunbar; sister Tricia (Boris) Elieff; as well as many extended family and friends.

 

He is predeceased by is wife Eileen Dunbar; father and mother, George and Vernie Dunbar and his brother Derald Dunbar.

 

Darwin was born on the farm outside of Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan on January 04, 1936, to George and Vernie Dunbar. He went to a small rural school just outside of Dorintosh, Saskatchewan near Meadow Lake Sk. Darwin went to school until grade 8, helping work on the farm, and later went to help his father working in the winter logging camps of northern Saskatchewan. The family later moved to the BC Okanagan following work and later to Little Prairie (Chetwynd). During this time Darwin played competitive baseball in Chetwynd (where he met Eileen) and later with the Groundbirch Giants.

 

Darwin married Eileen in October of 1961. Eileen and Darwin had three sons, Donald, Darren and Denton. Darwin was a devoted husband and father and an avid farmer/rancher. He enjoyed living and working on the ranch and actively looked forward to the different seasonal activities with his family and especially enjoyed working with horses and purebred cattle. Darwin cared for his wife Eileen on the ranch in their final years as well as her brother Bert until they were no longer able to live on the farm. He enjoyed having tea with friends and family and sharing many stories from his past. 

 

Darwin and Eileen’s family Donald, Darren (Barbie) and Denton (Freya) live and work on the ranch with their grandchildren Donavan, Dalton and Dalaney (Darren and Barbie) and Ayla and Damon (Denton and Freya).

 

Darwin volunteered much time to local agriculture association. Serving for a period as President of BC South Peace Stockman’s Assoc. as well as spending 6 years and hundreds of hours working on the South Peace LRMP agreement (Land & Resource Management Plan)

 

A private family service is to be scheduled at a future date.
